Playcentre People - Jennie Daws

Every Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday parents, grandparents, nannies and small children come to the church ready for another morning of fun and friendship at playcentre. While the parents are chatting and the children are playing, behind the scenes there are people kindly volunteering their time and effort to ensure things run smoothly. This week Jennie Daws sat down with us and answered a few questions about life as a playcentre volunteer...
How do you help out at playcentre?

'Doug and I are here at 8am every Monday and Tuesday. On Mondays we completely set up so that Sue and Libby can walk in after school drop offs and know that all is ready. I also provide support and encouragement for Sue and Libby and develop relationships with attendees.'

What is your favourite thing about volunteering?

'I love coming to playcentre as do all the mums, dads, volunteers, carers and kids! It has been great contributing in such a practical way to an area of our church which is so important.'

Describe a typical morning for you...

I try to set up the home corner, dress ups, reading area, craft tables etc, so that the children will be excited by what they see and inspired to enjoy each area.  I like to set toys in a way that will encourage imaginative playing.

How long have you been helping out?

Approximately 1 year.

Do you have a favourite memory from playcentre?

'I have been privileged to support a few parents in their time of need. People say to me all the time that this is one of the best playcentres around. One mum also said to me that "this church knows how to treat a lady." People love how we have such a large indoor/outdoor area, lots of activities and especially the chance to enjoy a great coffee and socialise.  Have you ever tried to have a coffee out with young children? It just doesn't happen!'

Anything else?

'I can't emphasise how much volunteers are needed on the three days to provide support to Sue and Libby and optimise this mission field on our doorstep. I would encourage people to consider supporting our wonderful playcentre leaders and think about becoming a volunteer. It amazes me the impact we can make - you just never know!'

Playcentre would love to see more people from ashgrove wanting to either attend playcentre or volunteer. If you have a heart for children and want to become involved in this mission to the community, Sue or Libby would love to hear from you!
