Celebrating Seniors...a Q&A with Don Steele

The annual Seniors' Celebration is happening again on Friday 26 August from 10am-12noon. Invite your neighbours and your friends to this jam-packed morning full of information, entertainment, and community. The day includes a delicious high tea, followed by a good old fashioned sing-along, and a chance to visit different displays from senior service providers.

Every year the report is the same - Seniors speak of how much they enjoyed the morning, and how amazed they were of the free things on offer, both from the Senior Service Providers and from the celebrations' free gift bags.

Last year at the event, Don Steel was interviewed on what life was like as a senior, so we decided to catch up with him this year for a bit of a Q&A...

My earliest memory is...as a two or three year old, watching my mother hanging out the washing on a cold, frosty morning in Kingaroy.

What is the hardest thing you've ever had to do? Say farewell to my precious, darling wife of almost 55 years on her death 7 years ago.

Who is your hero? Why? My glorious hero is my Lord and Saviour , Jesus Christ, who died for me as He bore my sins on the cross.

My happiest moment was...when, at 17 years of age, I received Jesus Christ as my Saviour.

How many years have you been going to the Seniors Celebration? Once previous to this year.

My heart sings when...I am able to regularly meet with my Lord in prayer - to think that I can speak with the Almighty, Eternal, All-Holy God, as a redeemed sinner.

What is one thing you appreciate about being a senior? The older I get, the more I value each new day that God gives me, as well as the blessed assurance of eternal life.

My worst habit is...Forgetfulness, which grows worse as age increases.

The thing I fear most is...failing to be an effective witness for my Saviour.

You wouldn't know it but I'm good at...washing and ironing - as taught to me when my dear wife suffered long periods of illness.

A lesson my parents taught me is...to be effective, as a child of Jesus Christ, in caring for others, before myself.

What did you enjoy most about the Seniors' event? The fellowship with others of an advanced age, sharing experiences with them, as well as sharing my faith.

How often do you help out  in the kitchen at Playcentre? Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week.

Are you a tea or coffee person? I have occasionally drank both tea and coffee - but I would not miss either of them if I could never drink them again.
